Terowie
We left Peterborough on Wednesday the 26th April and headed for Auburn, near Clare. On the way we drove through Terowie. This town struck us as a ghost town in many ways. Almost the entire main road in town had no open buildings. One shop had a sign saying, ‘Open Saturday’. There was a couple of buildings in the main street that looked like they were maintained but I am not sure if they were open.
There were a couple of building that indicated their era of 1884 and 1881.
There were a couple of streets that had a lot of residences but in terms of a CBD it was dead. I love the old vocabulary, ie ‘Modern Car Service’ and ‘Lubritorium’. I wonder if those old garages envisaged working on computers in motor vehicles.
Terowie’s claim to fame was its railway. It was a big deal back in the day.
Terowie’s other claim to fame was the visit by General Douglas MacArthur where he pronounced, “I shall return”. I’m no fan of his for his disdain of Australian soldiers for what it’s worth.
