Broken Hill
We left Farrell Flat on Friday the 28th April and headed for Broken Hill. It was a 400km drive so another big driving day. En-route we stopped at Jamestown to check it out and grab some morning tea. The bakery there is a beauty. Linda had a walk up the street and found a couple of dresses for our grand-daughter. She had seen them in ‘Buy From the Bush’ website, not necessarily from that store though. They were expensive but she was delighted to hear they were 50% off. That made her morning. Back on the road again and when we stopped for lunch it was a rest stop. I got these photos to show how sparse and flat the terrain was. It was good to be experiencing the outback as it is so foreign to our home environment.
About 3.30pm we pulled into the Regional Event Centre & Racecourse Campground. We had booked in there on an unpowered site and with my CMCA membership it was only $15. A couple of days earlier Jan had found the only two caravan parks in town were full so I booked the Racecourse Campground a couple of days ahead. That was a good thing because it was now all but full. The racecourse is a trotting track which only has two meeting a year but trotters train on it everyday.
As I wanted to stay hooked up, Gary, the caretaker had me line up along the fence which was fine. This photo shows me in that position along the fence. The bonus was I was able to hook up with water. Technically I was not entitled to it for an unpowered site and Gary said he would not mind.
It is a non profit business and the camping side of it goes towards funding restoration of the racecourse older grandstand.
That evening we had our last happy hour with Jan & Ross for the trip. The colours of the late afternoon were lovely.
We are not doing any sightseeing in Broken Hill as we have been there a couple of times before. So no more photos of this great town. Sorry about that.
