Melrose
We left Burra on Saturday the 15th April about 8.15am. It rained the night before and it was quite overcast on this day so it was a good day for driving. After a fair bit of playing it by ear our destination for the day turned out to be Hawker. There were two ways to go from Burra and both were the same distance, ie 235km. One was via Peterborough which I have been before a few times and the other was via Melrose. On all the writeups on the Flinders Ranges, Melrose always rates a mention as it is considered the southern end of the Flinders and it is right beside Mount Remarkable. As I have never been to Melrose that is the way we went. It was a nice drive and Melrose is a nice little town. We stopped and got a coffee.
Mt Remarkable is an imposing landmark for the town. It is a mecca for trail bike riders.
There was a huge flock of corellas flying around town.
Walked over to the National Park where there was a little suspension bridge. I don’t know what the purpose of a little bridge like that was for there.
Then we walked up a block or two from the main street where there was an old flour mill which was converted into a brewery. It is now the Jacka brothers Brewery. They have turned it into a great dining venue with a wood fired pizza oven.
There is a massive blue gum tree that has been named The Brewery Tree because of its location I suppose.
So having had a look at Melrose we moved on to Hawker.
